New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2027 Preview: The Debuts Worth Your Attention, From Henry Zankov at Diane von Furstenberg to Sabyasachi

A New York fashion week runway show

New York Fashion Week returns on Thursday 10 September and runs through Tuesday 15 September 2026, showing spring and summer 2027 collections. The preliminary official schedule from the Council of Fashion Designers of America carries roughly seventy runway shows and presentations, with further collections shown by appointment and digitally.

On paper that is a normal season. In practice it is not, because of what sits at either end of the calendar and what is scattered through the middle.

The week actually starts on the ninth

Ralph Lauren will present his spring 2027 collection on Wednesday 9 September, the evening before the official schedule opens, continuing his long habit of showing on his own terms. He is not alone that night. Coach, Rachel Comey, who is marking twenty five years in the industry this season, Cult Gaia, J. Press and Libertine are also showing on the eve of the week, which turns what used to be a quiet warm up into a full evening in its own right.

Marc Jacobs moved even further outside the calendar, having already shown his spring 2027 collection on 29 June 2026.

The opening: Henry Zankov at Diane von Furstenberg

The official week begins at 9:30 in the morning on 10 September with the debut collection of Henry Zankov as artistic director of Diane von Furstenberg. It is the most consequential appointment on the American calendar this season and the hardest brief in the room.

Diane von Furstenberg is a house built on one garment and one idea about how a woman gets dressed. The wrap dress is not a signature in the way a bag is a signature. It is the entire proposition, tied to a specific woman, a specific decade and a specific argument about independence. Zankov, a CFDA member known for his work in knitwear, has to decide whether to design around it, through it or past it.

Debuts are judged differently from other shows. Most collections are assessed on whether they are good. A debut is assessed on whether the designer understood the assignment, and here the assignment is unusually difficult to define.

The closing: Thom Browne

Thom Browne closes the week on 15 September, and the placement is deliberate. For two decades his shows have functioned as theatre rather than as presentation, closer to a staged narrative than a runway. Ending the season with him signals that the week wants to be remembered rather than simply shopped.

The debut everyone outside fashion will notice

Sabyasachi joins the official NYFW schedule for the first time, showing on 15 September. The Indian couturier arrives with a scale of craft and embroidery rarely seen on a New York runway, and the significance runs well beyond one show. An Indian couture house on the official American calendar changes the answer to the question of whose stories the New York season is willing to tell.

The other names to know

The calendar carries a substantial group of first time and returning names alongside the anchors.

The policy change underneath the schedule

This is also the first New York Fashion Week to run fully under the CFDA's fur free policy, which applies across every brand on the official schedule. It was announced in September 2025 with a deliberate lead time so that designers could adjust materials and show plans. We have covered what the policy does and does not cover separately.

What to actually watch for

Three questions are worth holding in mind while the images arrive.

Does the debut answer the house or the designer?

The most common failure in a debut collection is a designer showing their own portfolio in someone else's building. The successful version borrows the house's vocabulary and says something new in it.

Does New York commit to being New York?

The CFDA has been explicit this season about American fashion not attempting to emulate other cities. Whether that produces conviction or defensiveness on the runway is the interesting question.

What filters down first?

For most readers this is the practical question. Historically the elements that reach the high street fastest are colour, one silhouette and one accessory shape, usually within four to six months.

Frequently asked questions

When is New York Fashion Week September 2026?

The official schedule runs from Thursday 10 September to Tuesday 15 September 2026, showing spring and summer 2027 collections. Several brands, including Ralph Lauren and Coach, show on 9 September, ahead of the official opening.

Why is it called spring summer 2027 when it happens in 2026?

Runway collections are shown roughly six months before they reach stores, so that buyers can place orders and production can run. What shows in September 2026 arrives in shops from around February 2027.

Which show opens and which closes?

Diane von Furstenberg opens the week on 10 September with Henry Zankov's debut. Thom Browne closes it on 15 September.

Can the public attend NYFW?

The official runway shows are industry only, requiring invitations from the brands. Some off schedule presentations, pop ups and retail activations are open to the public, and the majority of shows are streamed or published within hours.

What comes after New York?

New York is the first of the four main weeks. London, Milan and Paris follow through the rest of September, meaning fashion month runs until early October.

The Velvet verdict

This is a season built on first collections rather than on established houses defending their positions, which makes it far less predictable than most Septembers. The show to watch is the one at 9:30 on the first morning, because a debut at a house defined by a single garment is the hardest test in fashion, and everybody in the room will be asking the same question at the same time.
